Everyone is looking getting the edge, especially in cycling. Cyclists are one of the hardest training people out there. The amount of time these people dedicate to the sport is staggering. It only makes sense that they are looking for the best energy drink for cycling.

After doing some research it was clear to me that most energy drinks out will not help cyclist, in fact they will most likely hinder them.

Most energy drinks are high in sugar and other stimulates to give you the illusion of energy, but these products do not actually produce energy. And even if you get a initial boost you will most likely crash if you are on a long ride.

Another issue is the accelerated heart rate. Because of the high levels of caffeine and other stimulates this can raise your heart rate. The higher heart rate the harder your body is working. The harder your body is working the less you are going to be able to put into your cycling.

Monster Energy

Monster Energy

Monster Energy is the energy that I started with. In saying that I can almost say that I wish I never started drinking energy drinks. Notice I said almost.

I opened a gym at 5 in the morning and I needed to be at work at 4:30 AM. The gym sold Monster Energy. I started drinking one every morning. This did seem to give more energy. I was definitely more alert. At least until around 9 AM. I then started to crash.

I was too tired to workout

I participated in martial arts at 11 AM. To get me motivated to actually going to the class I started drinking another Monster Energy at 10:45 AM. I was more alert when I went to class but because of the elevated heart rate I started burning out at class. I got extremely winded and it got worse over time.

I then crashed again at around 2 and take a 3 hour nap. I woke up and had one more monster energy drink. I then went back to the gym for to meet my clients for their personal training sessions. Because of the earlier events I had trouble falling asleep at night only to start the whole process again.


It started to affect my work

Over time it only got worse. I worked out less and started to gain weight. It halted my progress in my sport, I did not see any gains on my workouts and it even affected my work. I was not as animated and energetic with my clients.

I even found it hard to quit. I got headaches and always found myself looking for the energy drink. Can you see now why I almost wish that I never started drinking Monster Energy.

5 Ways to get more energy

There are many things that you can throughout the day to get you more energy. Just by following these simple steps will be amazed how much more energy you will have.

  1. Breath – There are specific breathing techniques that will help you produce instant energy. You will breathe in on a four count all inhaling with a slight pause between the counts. Each count will take about ½ of a second. You will exhale in the same fashion. During each count you will tap your thumb to one of your fingers. Move your thumb to another finger on each count. There are pressure points in your fingers. When the fingers are stimulated it will help produce more energy.
  2. Movement – When you find yourself tired take notice of your posture. Are you smiling? Do you have good posture? Are you walking briskly or slowly? You are probably not doing any of these. Stand up straight and take a small walk. If you are at work, walk to the water cooler. Walk a little faster than you normally would. By moving like you have energy, you will actually start to feel like you have energy.
  3. Have a Snack – Eating a healthy snack mid morning and mid afternoon can help produce more energy. Avoid snacks that have a lot of sugar. They idea is to keep your blood sugars level. Doing this will keep you from crashing at certain times doing the day.
  4. Get Adequate Sleep – Make sure that you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Your body needs this to function properly. You know what happens if you do not get enough. If you sleep too much you will have troubles falling asleep and wake in the middle of the night. It is best to get in the habit of getting up the same time every morning.

5 Energy Drink

I just started seeing 5 hour energy pop up in my neighborhood gas stations. And to tell you the truth 5 hour energy did not seem all that bad compared to the other drinks at the store. It only had 4 calories and it was supposed to last 5 hours (longer than most energy drinks).
The Following Caution on the label did not do much to me:

CAUTION: Contains caffeine comparable to a cup of the leading premium coffee. Limit caffeine products to avoid nervousness, sleeplessness, and occasional rapid heartbeat. You may experience a Niacin Flush (hot feeling, skin redness) that lasts a few minutes. This is caused by Niacin (Vitamin B3) increasing blood flow near the skin.

After reading that it was just more of the same. 5 hour energy provides like 99% of all energy drinks out still uses stimulates to give you the illusion of energy. It is my belief that these companies need to take a step back and come up with a better solution.
